7th UNAOC Global Forum will stress the importance of inclusiveness to just and peaceful societies

New York, April 25, 2016. “Living Together in Inclusive Societies: A Challenge and A Goal” will be the theme of the upcoming 7th Global Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC). The Forum will initiate a unique, large-scale global convening and discussion on building inclusive societies, as called for by Sustainable Development Goal 16 of the UN’s 2030 Development Agenda.

“The challenge we face when we look at inclusiveness is how to forge a united and harmonious society which respects, not just tolerates, differences, especially of the minorities. In our world today, inclusiveness has become a pre-requisite for a peaceful society”, says United Nations High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations Mr. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser.
In various sessions, experts who are participating in the Forum will have the opportunity to highlight the diverse challenges that impede the inclusiveness of societies today. By the same token, the Forum will provide a platform for sharing good practices from all around the world.

In the dedicated plenary session, Good Practices in Social Inclusion, panellists will suggest ways in which UNAOC and/or partners could be a platform to systematically and continuously exchange and inspire good practices of inclusion.

Panellists will include, amongst others, Danilo Türk, former President of Slovenia, Miguel Ángel Moratinos, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Spain, and Mehriban Aliyeva, First Lady of Azerbaijan and Head of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation.

Including and empowering women is crucial to sustainable peace. The breakout session on “Women and Peace-building in Conflict Zones in Africa” will discuss the implementation deficits in the UN’s women, peace, and security agenda as well as the opportunities for women to exercise their leadership role when it comes to building inclusive and peaceful societies in the aftermath of conflict.

Speakers at this session will include Oumou Sall Seck, Mayor of the City of Goudam, Mali, Hijran Huseynova, Chairwoman of the State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and Anna Fumarola, Project Manager at the Women for Africa Foundation.

The session will be moderated by Ambassador Maged A. Abdelaziz, Under-Secretary General and Special Adviser on Africa.
