Born in Istanbul in 1954, Recep Tayyib Erdoğan has been the President of Turkey since 2014. He established the Justice and Development Party (AKP) in 2001 and served as prime minister from 2003-2014. In that role, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan implemented a number of reforms of crucial importance to progress the democratization and transparency of Turkey. He also served as mayor of Istanbul from 1994-1998. Mr. Erdoğan graduated from Marmara University’s Faculty of Economics and Commercial Sciences.
